Habitat: This finch species prefers damp shrubby and grassy areas that are usually close to a water source. It is present in the lowlands. Distribution: This species has been reported from eastern Nicaragua to western Panama. In Panama, this species is only found in the western part of Bocas del Toro. Natural History Notes: You will usually find this species alone or in pairs, feeding in open areas. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: This species has a total length of 5.5 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has big, heavy bill with a red coloration in the male and a dark gray coloration in the female. The plumage of the male is entirely black. On the other hand, the female has a dark brown coloration on the above and a more reddish brown coloration on the part below.
