Habitat: This Owl species can be found in humid forests and mature second-growth woodland, in lowlands and foothills. Distribution: This species has been reported from Mexicto south to Bolivia and northern Brazil. Natural History Notes: The Guatemalan Screech-Owl is not very well known in Panama. Its call consists of a short, guttural repeated sound like "kr-r-r-r-r-o" which is given at high intervals. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: This species has a total length of 20.3 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird poseesses ear-tufts (ear-like on top of the head) and a yellow iris. The plumage is dark gray-brown above and covered with dense,wavy dark gray bars. The wing-coverts and the scapulars show large white spots. The plumage below is pale brown, densely covered by fine, wavy dark brown bars, but with some vertical stripes. This owl shows a rufous phase, where the grayish-brown coloration is replaced by rufous-chestnut coloration.
