Habitat: This species can be found in lowlands on freshwater ponds, lakes and undisturbed streasm and rivers with abundant bordering vegetation. Distribution: This species has been reported from southern Mexico to northern Bolivia, northeastern Argentina and southern Brazil. Natural History Notes: The Sungrebe is a priori an aquatic bird. You will find it swimming close to the shore or perched on low branches. They dive well, but rarely fly unless alarmed. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 11 inches and 12 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has a slim red bill and black-and-yellow band feet that show a web shape. The head is fairly small and is supported by a slim neck. We can distinguish a black crown and hindneck with white superciliary. There is also a black stripe on the cheeks and on the sides of the neck and down the neck. The plumage is mostly olive brown on the above and white on the part below. The wide tail is black with fine white tips. The female looks similar, with the exception of the cheeks that show a buffy coloration.
