Habitat: The Bat falcon favors forests, clearings and woodland borders habitats. Distribution: This species has been reported from Mexico to Bolivia, northern Argentina and southern Brazil. Natural History Notes: The falcon species will be usually found perched on a branch, mostly in pairs. You may find it hunting early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Its diet consists mainly of large insects, other small birds and bats. The falcon will catch its prey in flight and may even eat it while still flying. Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 9 and 12 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The wings have a pointed shape and a fine and long. The plumage is dark blue on the above and on the sides of the head. Then, the throat, upper chest and the sides of the neck are all white colored, but with sometime a little orange coloration. The lower chest, the breast and the upper belly are black with small bands of white. Finally, the lower belly shows a rufous (reddish) coloration. Notes: Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species.
