Habitat: This Barbet species will favor humid montane forests and forest borders in the foothills and highlands. Distribution: This species has been reported from Costa Rica to northern Peru. Natural History Notes: The Red-headed Barbet is usually part of groups of other bird species, and tend to forage at all tree levels. This bird is not very noisy, but you might sometimes hear its call that is composed of hollow notes that last each one two seconds and sound like "who-oh-oh-oh-oh". Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: This species has a total length of 15.8 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has an heavy green-yellow bill and a black iris. The male is beautiful with the head and the neck brightly red colored. We can also distinguish some a black patch around the eye and a bluish-white bar across the back of the neck. Otherwise, the plumage above is dull green. The red coloration present on the throat becomes more orange on the chest and yellow on the breast and the center of the belly. The flanks are whitish with some green stripes. The female looks fairly different, with the forehead and the area around the eye black colored and the olive green crown. The sides of the head are gray blue and bordered by a yellow line. Otherwise, the plumage is green above and the lower underparts are yellowish with green stripes. The throat is grayish yellow and the chest is orange-yellow.
