Bocas Species Database
Habitat: This species can be found in greater numbers in open areas and forested areas. It can be found around cities.   Distribution: The Turkey vulture breeds from southern Canada to Tierra del Fuego and the Greater Antilles. The northern birds usually migrate south during winter in Middle America and northwestern South America.   Natural History Notes: The Turkey vulture is similar to the Black vulture but is less numerous around cities and less gregarious. It is a good flyer that can soar for a long time without a flap and that is able to take advantage of every air current.   Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between71 cm and 81 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The common Turkey vulture has a black plumage with a bare head and neck of a reddish coloration. Soars with wings held slightly above the horizontal. We can distinguish the light gray flight feathers that contrast with the black appearance of the rest of the body.   Notes: Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident and a latitudinal migratory species.
