Bocas Species Database Habitat: Cannot tolerate desiccation and is common down to 6m, though some reports are as deep as 25m. Grows on a diversity of sediments. Distribution: This species can be found along the Caribbean Sea until the Guyana and is very common in Bocas del Toro, in areas well exposed to the open sea. In Bocas del Toro, the species was reported at the entrance of the Bocas del Drago Canal, in the Canal of Bocas del Toro in Isla Bastimentos, Carenero and Solarte. The species can also be found in other locations, such as Punta Coco and Punta Juan, in San Cristobal and the coral reef of San Pond Sack. It is much more difficult to find it at the entrance of Bahia Azul and in the islands Cayo Agua, Isla Zapatillas and Isla Popa. Natural History Notes: Can form monospecific meadows, but often grows mixed with Thalassia testudinum. Photo scale bar: 10cm. Depth: 0 - 25m Characteristics: Dioecious perennial. Slender rhizome bears 2-3 cylindrical leaves from each node. Internode distance is 1-5 cm. Leaf blade is 1-2mm diameter and 7-30cm long. |
