Habitat: Tropical forests, up to about 1100 meters. Generally found near lowland rivers, ponds, and quiet coastal bays. Distribution: Southern Mexico south through Central America to Argentina, Peru, and Brazil. Natural History Notes: Guild 2: Background cluttered space/aerial insectivore (Kalko, et al., 1996). Feeds primarily on insects over water surfaces. One to two activity periods at night of a few hours duration. Roosts in hollow trees, caves, buildings. Breeding occurs around November - December, with young born during April or May. Characteristics: Similar to Noctilio leporinus, only smaller. Noseleaf absent, divided and drooping upper lips, bulldog appearance, cheek pouches present, large canines, ears separate, pointed, tail entends about one third length of interfemoral membrane, tip free of dorsal surface of membrane, feet and claws strong but not enlarged for fishing. Short velvety fur, dorsal surface can be orangish, reddish or grayish, with faint dorsal stripe from shoulders to rump, venter lighter. Forearm 54-65mm, Mb less than 40gms.
