Habitat: This species can been found near water sources such as ponds, lakes and freshwater marshes.   Distribution: This species breeds in western North America and migrate south during winter to northern Colombia and Venezuela, and in West Indies. It has been reported in different provinces of Panama, including Bocas del Toro.   Natural History Notes: Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC)   Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 45.72 cm and 55.88 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The males can be recognized by a white crown and a green patch behind the eye. Its chest and sides are pinkish brown and the center of its underparts is white. The female on the other side is brown and has the head and neck grayish. However, in flight, both sexes show white wing-coverts. An interesting habit unique to Ana americana is that they swim with more upright carriage than other Anas ducks.
