Habitat: Marine. Found on rocky and coral reefs, drift near bottom, occasionaly in open water well above reefs or off walls. Depth range 6 - 33 m. Natural History Notes: Feeds on various kind of small fishes and on crabs. Solitary, oviparous. Frequently exceeds 50 ponds, 180 pounds reported from Bermuda. Characteristics: Narrow pale to yellow-orange margin on pectoral fins that grades into the darker basal portion of the fin. Caudal fin usually truncate. Soft dorsal and anal fins have a broad outer blackish zone. Similar zone on caudal fin also, followed by a narrow white margin. Can assume a wide range of color patterns. May be pale grey with large rectangular brownish blotches presenting nearly square ends, dark reddish grey with short dark streaks along mid-side, or white except for a few dusky bars, dots, and dark fin margins.
