Habitat: Marine and brackish waters. Wide variety of habitats. Reefs, grass and marl, creeks lined with mangroves. Juveniles often inhabit shallow bays, inlets, mangrove lagoons and over sand bottoms with or without seagrass (Thalassia). Young sometimes enter brackish waters. Depth range 2 - 63 m. Natural History Notes: Carnivorous. Feeds on fishes, shrimps, crabs, worms, gastropods and cephalopods. Drift in small to medium groups just above reefs, in shade of large coral structures, specially elkhorn and large gorgonians. Characteristics: Silver to copper with a suffusion of yellow, borken up by a series of narrow pale bars which may be faint or absent in large adults. Fins yellowish to pale orange with shades of green. Juveniles present marked vertical bars on back.
