Habitat: Marine. Shallow reefs, reef-sand areas and grass beds. This wrasse occurs in more diverse habitats than any of the others. Depth range 1 - 15 m. Natural History Notes: Mobile Invertebrate feeder. Any disturbance of the bottom will attract a swarm of them, all hoping to find some morsel of food uncovered. Feeds on fish, crabs, sea urchins, polychaete worms, mollusks and brittle stars. While they will eat almost any animal material offerred, other fishes evidently are the normal mainstay in their diet. Characteristics: Three color phases. Adults : two dark lateral stripes, one running from snout through eye to caudal base and the other, less pronounced, on lower side of body. A small bicolored spot at edge of gill cover within upper dark stripe (all phases). Dark triangular corners on tail. Irregular light red bands on head and on caudal fin. Shades of green.
