Habitat: Marine, reef-associatied. Most comonly found in caves or under ledges. Flit about in or near recesses. Depth range: a few - 200 feet. Natural History Notes: Swims with his belly towards the substratum, thus under ledges it is seen upside down. Frequently small groups of two or three to a dozen or more are seen in the same cave. Reported to pick small items from the plancton as well as bodies of other fishes, allegedly in an attempt to feed on ectoparasites. Males show various types of nest care behavior. Characteristics: Typical coloration, with anterior half violet and posterior half yellow. Black spot at front of dorsal fin, gloden streaks on head running across eyes.
