Family: Solanderiidae

Polyp: Colony fan-shaped, reaching up to 30 cm in height and with all ramifications in the same plane; coenosarc dark red, without hydrophores; younger ramifications mainly with skeletal longitudinal elements; skeletal web in older branches characterized by circular and rectangular openings. Hydranth 0.6 mm long, with 4 capitate oral tentacles and 8-12 aboral capitate tentacles; cnidome composed by stenoteles of two sizes. Reproduction: Gonophores as cryptomedusoids. Ecology and Distribution: Found in low sedimentation areas. Reported previously from North Carolina to Brazil. In Bocas del Toro collected in Swans Cay. Remarks: Similar to Solanderia dendritica, which has up to 50 tentacles and reaches up to 7 cm in height. Similar taxa: Solanderia dendritica.
