Habitat: This eagle species can be found in forest canopy, in forest borders and in clearings. Distribution: This species has been reported from southern Mexico to northern Argentina and southern Brazil. Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 56 cm and 61 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). Compared to other eagles, the Black-and-white hawk-eagle is fairly small. We can easily see that the cere is orange and that the head, neck and underparts are white. On the face, we can see a small black mask and on the top of the head, we can notice a bushy black crest. The upperparts are also black. Also, the legs are feathered down to the toes. The tail is black but shows three large gray bands and a gray tip.
