Habitat: This Redstart species can be found in forest borders and second-growth woodland and mangroves. Distribution: This species is migratory. It breeds in North America and migrate south to Florida, the West Indies and from Mexico to Peru, northern Brazil and the Guianas. Natural History Notes: The American Redstart is an active bird that will almost always undergo movements with its wings or it tail. It is usually found with other bird species, flying to catch insects. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a latitudinal migratory species. Characteristics: This species has a total lengt of 12.7 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The male shows a beautiful plumage pattern with a mostly black background and large patches of orange on the wings, the sides of the body and at the base of the tail. Then, the belly is white. The female looks different, with an olive coloration on the above, grayer on the head, and with white lines below the eyes. The part below is mostly white, but with yellow patches on the wings, the sides of the body and at the base of the tail. The immature looks like the female and it will take it two years to reach the adult male plumage.
