Habitat: This Tanager species favors shrubby areas, woodland borders, clearings and garden areas in the lowlands. Distribution: This species has been reported from southeastern Mexico to western Panama. Natural History Notes: Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species. Characteristics: This species has a total length of 6.75 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The male is characterized by a black plumage that contrasts greatly with the scarlet red lower back and rump. The bill is pale blue with a black tip. The female reported from Bocas del Toro (passerinii) has a duller plumage that consists of a brown plumage above, becoming yellowish on the back and the rump. The chest and the underparts are yellow-olive green.
