Habitat: This Tanager species can be found in shrubby areas, clearings and gardens areas in the lowlands. They will favor habitats near water sources. Distribution: This species has been reported from western Panama to western Ecuador. Natural History Notes: The Flame-rumped Tanager is usually found in pairs or in small groups, foraging near the ground. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: This species has a total length of 7 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has a pale plue bill with a black tip. The male has a uniformly black plumage that contrast greatly with the bright yellow coloration on the lower back and the rump. The female has a gray-brown coloration on the above with the characteristic yellow lower back and yellow rump. The throat is whitish and the underparts are more "lemon" yellow.
