Habitat: This species is one of the most numerous hummingbirds in the western Chiriqui highlands. Common in forest lower growth, borders, and shrubby clearings. Distribution: Species reported from Southern Costa Rica and extreme western Panama. Natural History Notes: It is interesting to note that although the majority of the males have a white throat, some males may have it purple. Characteristics: This species has a total length of 10.16 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The beak of this hummingbird is straight, with a length of 1.90 cm. The male has the above part shinning green, with the exception of a blue-green crown on top of the head. On the sides, we can distinguish a white stripe. The throat is white, the chest is bright green, the lower part is brown-gray and the tail is black. The female has also a green above but with not crown. The side of the head is blackish with a white stripe and the entire underparts are “tawny-rufous”. We can see the outer feathers tipped white.
