Habitat: This Dacnis species favors second-growth woodland, forest borders and clearings habitats in the humid lowlands. Distribution: This species has been reported from southern Honduras to eastern Bolivia, northeastern Argentina and southern Brazil. Natural History Notes: The Blue Dacnis is usually found foraging at different tree levels, in pairs or in small groups. Its diet consists of insects caught from the foliage or bromeliads, and fruits. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species. Characteristics: This species has a total length of 5 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has a straight and pointed bill with some pink-brown at the base. The legs are pinkish and the iris is red. The male has a beautiful bright blue coloration with some black on the lores, the back the wings, the tail and the throat. The wings have their edges blue colored. The race reported in Bocas del Toro (callaina) shows a more turquoise blue plumage than the birds observed in the eastern part of Panama. The female has a plumage mostly bright green with a paler coloration below. The head is blue and the throat is grayish.
