Habitat: This Wren species will favor canopy and humid forest borders and clearings habitats in the lowlands and foothills of Bocas del Toro. Distribution: This species has been reported from eastern Mexico to western Panama; northern Colombia; northwestern Ecuador. Natural History Notes: The Band-backed Wren is usually found in pairs or in small groups. It will forage for insects and spiders at all levels, but especially among vines and epiphytes. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species. Characteristics: This species has a total length of 19 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This large Wren has a fairly long and slightly decurved bill. This bird has a black crown (top of the head) with the edges brown-gray and a white band above the eye. Otherwise, the upperparts show an extended band pattern of black and whitish. Also, the throat, the chest and the breast all have a whitish background, but are also covered with black spots. The belly is tawny orange.
