Habitat: This Macaw species favors dense forests and used to be fairly widespread in the country, but due to the destruction of forest covers, its habitat is much more scattered. Distribution: This species has been reported from eastern Honduras to western Ecuador. Natural History Notes: The Great green Macaw is usually found in pairs or in small groups of up to 8 birds. Its call is fairly loud, with far-carrying raucous notes. Its population has dratically decreased due to habitat loss and hunting. This bird was fairly popular as a cagebird due to its strong personality. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Endangered (EN). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 86.4 cm and 91.4 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This rare and beautiful bird has a very long pointed tail, a pale iris and a black bill with a gray tip. The plumage is mostly yellowish-green, except for the bright red forehead and the pink bare skin facial area. Then, the lower part of the back, the rump and the under tail-coverts are pale blue. The tail is multicolored and has the base red, with the tips and the outer feathers blue and an olive coloration tail.
