Morphological Description: Shape: Valves oval in shape with deep incisur; anteroventral corner of valve with a bump (projecting bulge). Male valve length = 1.71-2.0mm. Color: Transparent, except for orange-brown light organ and orangish abdomen. Eye: is dark brown or maroon with about 16 ommatidia. Lateral eye length=0.25-0.3mm. Infold setae: Rostral Row (RR) of 9-11 long double bristles; 1 double bristle posterior to RR; 0 bristles anterior to RR. 2-3 bristles dorsal to incisur; 1 bristle posterodorsal to inner edge of incisur; 1 longer and 0-1 shorter bristles on inner edge of incisur; 1 short bristle posteroventral to inner edge of incisur; Anterior edge of incisur with 1-3 short bristles. Anteroventral Row (AVR) of 7-13 long double bristles; 0-1 small setae posterior to AVR. Bioluminescent Display: Male display occurs 1-3 m over gorgonians about 50 min after sunset in an oblique upward direction. Pulse duration is about 4 sec and is blue in color. Pulse distance: 15 cm between first two pulses; 8 cm between 2nd and 3rd pulses; 5 cm between 3rd and 4th pulses; remaining pulses are about 2 cm apart. Displays of multiple males are loosely synchronized. |
