Habitat: Marine, reef-associated. Rare at oceanic islands. Natural History Notes: Feeds almost entirely at night, eating molluscs, annelids and small fishes. Adults apparently prefer to school in the more open areas on the reefs. Occasionally solitary. Young frequent inshore, specially on grass beds. Depth: 3 - 30m Characteristics: Diagonal rows of dark spots (at the center of each scale) on the upper half of the body. The rows of spots are more strongly oblique above than below the lateral line. Dorsal, anal, caudal and ventral fins dusky to black.
