Bocas Species Database Habitat: It is a nocturnal species that usually lives under rocks. Distribution: This species has been reported from South Carolina to the West Indies and Brazil. Characteristics: This medium sized crab has an average length of 5 cm. The back is not smooth, due to the presence of flat granules. The edges of the carapace comprise 8 pairs of spines. We can also distinguish a large tooth in the middle of the upper finger of the claw. The legs are covered with hair. The color pattern for this species consists in a brown caparace with the claw olive colored above and paler below and the tips of the claw reddish. We can also distinguish the white color of the teeth. All the species of the genus Mithrax share certain characteristics such as: spoon-shaped claw tips, legs armed with spines and the carapace with two rostral horns and 3-4 lobes on the front margin. |
