Adult: Species description based on O'Neill and Mendelson (2004). A rather large frog (males to 67.2 mm, females to 104.5 mm). Dorsal: Dorsal coloration varies from gray to brown. The dorsum in generally darker on the back than on the sides, except for a thin, light middorsal stripe. The upper lip is pale cream. The dorsal surface is covered in tiny bumps. The parietal glands are smaller than the eyes. Ventral: Ventral coloration is pale cream with some light pigmentation in the throat region and on the undersurfaces of the lower limbs. The ventral surface is granular. Distinguishing characteristics: The cranial crests on top of the head are less developed (lower and thinner) in Incilius aucoinae than in I. melanochlorus (see photographs in O'Neill and Mendelson 2004). Breeding season: Incilius aucoinae breeds in streams during the dry season (O'Neill and Mendelson 2004). Metamorph juvenile: Juveniles look similar to adults, except the ventral surface is more pigmented (O'Neill and Mendelson 2004). Habitat: Lowland forest to 500 m. Type locality: airport at the town of Aguabuena, Distrito Sierpe, Osa Peninsula, Puntarenas Province, Costa Rica (approximately 8° 26′ N, 83° 38′ W) Diagnostic description: Robust and large toad (males 6.7 cm in length, females 10.4 cm in length); of brown to gray; with a thin line on the back; with small tympanum; poorly developed or absent in both sexes and pretimpánicas preorbital crests; warm and short feet; dorsal skin homogeneously covered with spicules, smaller and concentrated in males; lateral tubercles in rows, round pointed in males and females; dorsally pointed at her, round nose profile; low and thin cranial crests; parotid glands small and triangular; relatively unmarked belly (O'Neill and Mendelson, 2004). Habitat: Tropical rainforests (O'Neill and Mendelson, 2004). Reproduction:It breeds in streams and rivers during the dry season (O'Neill and Mendelson, 2004). Food: It feeds on insects. Behavior:It is a nocturnal animal (Savage, 2002). Distribution in Costa Rica: At low and moist in the center and south of the Pacific slope, from the Tarcoles River to the border with Panama (O'Neill and Mendelson, 2004) land. |
