Adult: Species description based on Duellman (2001). A very large, robust treefrog with a rather long snout (males to 132 mm, females to 118 mm). Dorsal: The dorsal surface is mottled brown. Some individuals have an orangeish or reddish hue. The upper lip is barred. Ventral: The ventral surface is pale yellow, except for the throat, which is dark grey. Concealed surfaces: The rear surfaces of the thighs are dark brown or grey. Eye: The membrane covering the eye is reticulated with silver. Extremities: The hands and feet have extensive webbing; the webbing between the fingers and toes is dark brown.
Breeding season: Breeding occurs early in the dry season (Ibanez et al 1999). Tadpole: Tadpoles are light brown with some dark green flecking (Duellman 2001). The tail often appears banded (Duellman 2001). The tadpoles are oval-shaped, but somewhat wider than deep (Duellman 2001). The tail musculature is not particularly robust (Duellman 2001). The dorsal fin is much deeper than the caudal fin, peaking near the center of the tail (Duellman 2001). Metamorph juvenile: Metamorphs are light brown with small, dark spots (Duellman 2001).
Habitat: Lowland forest to 1000 m. Call: A series of short, low notes (Ibanez et al 1999) Behavior and communication: Males and females construct nest basins from sand or gravel near the edges of small streams for their offspring (Duellman 2001). The same nest may be used for multiple oviposition events (Duellman 2001). Tadpoles eventually move into the adjacent stream as nests are flooded (Ibanez et al 1999). Type locality: America
