Habitat: This Tanager species is rarely observed in Panama, but you may find it in canopy and forest borders and woodland habitats in the lowlands. Distribution: This species is migratory. It breeds in eastern North America and migrate south mainly in western Amazonia, but a few will migrate to Panama. Natural History Notes: The Scarlet Tanager feeds high in trees and will catch insects in flight and will also feed on fruits, especially during winter. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: This species has a total length of 6.75 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has a pointed blue gray for the male, and olive-gray for the female. The breeding plumage of the male is scarlet red with black wings and a black tail. In Panama, the male will wear its nonbreeding plumage. The nonbreeding has an olive green coloration on the above with a yellower coloration on the head. The tail and the wings are black and the part below is yellow. The female looks like the nonbreeding male but has a duller coloration and has more dark gray wings and tail. The part below is yellower.
