Habitat: This heron can be encountered in shady forest streams and wet depressions. They are rarely in wide open areas. Distribution: This species has been reported from Southeastern Mexico to northern Bolivia and central Brazil. Natural History Notes: This bird is usually a solitary and fairly shy. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 71.12 cm and 81.28 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The heron is known to have a very long, slim neck and a slender beak. Compared to the neck, the legs are short. The part above is dark green, but the face is black and a long blue-gray crest can be seen on top of the head. Then, the neck and the underparts have a chestnut coloration, but the chest shows a patch of grayish-blue. The immature animals have a dark brown coloration on the part above and also a black crown.
