Habitat: This Owl species will favor forests and second-growth woodland habitats in humid lowlands. Distribution: This species has been reported from southern Mexico to Bolivia, northern Argentina, and southern Brazil. Natural History Notes: The Spectacled Owl is a nocturnal bird that rest during the day in dense foliage and starts to be active at night, or in the afternoon when it is fairly cloudy. You may hear its call that consists of repeated fast series of 6 to 8 hoots like "bobobobobobo". Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 43.2 cm and 48.3 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This large owl has the iris yellow but does not show ear-tufts. The plumage is dark brown on the above, with a characteristic large white stripe that starts from the eyebrows and extend to the lores and to the area around the bill. Then, the throat is white and the lower underparts are beige-white. We can also distinguish a broad dark brown band on the chest. The immature bird will look very different, with a plumage mostly whitish and a black face and brown wings.
