Habitat: The species usually prefers shrubby clearing and forest borders in high mountains. Distribution: Reported from Costa Rica and western Panama. Natural History Notes: This species is highly active and pugnacious and feeds relatively low at flowers and flowering shrubs, often with other hummingbird spp. Characteristics: This species has a total length of 10.80 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The beak of this hummingbird is straight, black above and pinkish below with a black tip, and has a length of 1.90 cm. Both sexes look similar. This bird has a blue crown on the top of the head and white spots behind the eye. The rest of the body is mostly green above with sometimes a blue iridescence on the rump. The tail is blue-black and the throat has a beautiful orange coloration, becoming scarlet red in the center. The chest is blue, becoming violet in the center. The underparts are green.
