Habitat: This species lives in forest borders and second-growth forests. Distribution: Species reported from Guatemala and Belize to western Venezuela and western Ecuador. Natural History Notes: Male Band-tailed Barbthroats display in loose groups, perching on low branches and seductively vibrating their partly fanned tails, while emitting a series of short squeaky notes. Characteristics: This species has a total length of 12.70 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The beak is fairly long (3.81 cm), has a decurved shape and the lower mandible is yellow. The above part of the body is dark green and a black mask surrounds the eye. The back throat contrasts greatly with the “cinnamon-rufous” colored chest. The part below is mostly gray and more reddish on the sides. The tail is rounded and mainly white but a broad black subterminal band can be easily noticed. Notes: Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species.
