Habitat: This Tanager species will favor forest borders, clearings and second-growth woodland in the highlands of Bocas del Toro. Distribution: This species has been reported from Costa Rica and western Panama. Natural History Notes: The Spangle-cheeked Tanager is usually found in pairs. Its diet consists of small fruits and insects. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: This species has a total length of 5 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has a black plumage above, as well as on the throat and the chest. Its is characterized by the head, the cheeks that are spangled (shining) with pale green and by the chest that is spangled with beige. We can also distinguish a "rusty" red patch on the nape. Then, the wings have their edges blue colored, the rump is brilliant green or blue and finally the lower underparts are cinnamon red.
