Habitat: This Spadebill species will favor undergrowth of humid forests, in foothills and highlands. Distribution: This species has been reported from Costa Rica to northern Bolivia, Paraguay, northeastern Argentina and southeastern Brazil. Natural History Notes: The White-throated Spadebill is fairly hard to encounter because it likes to be hidden in dense vegetation. If you see it, you will find it alone, perched motionless on a branch. However, you can more easily hear its call, which consists of a sharp "squeep!" or "squip" that is sometimes repeated in series. Its diet consists mainly of small invertebrates. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 3.5 inches and 3.75 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This very small bird has a large flat bill and a short tail. The plumage is olive brown above with a masked yellow crown patch. We can also distinguish a beige supraloral stripe and a beige ring around the eye. The throat is white and the chest and the side of the body are brown-beige. The underparts are pale yellow.
