Habitat: This Woodpecker species will favor habitats such as humid forests in the lowlands of western Panama. Distribution: This species has been reported from Honduras to western Panama. Natural History Notes: Little is known about the Rufous-winged Woodpecker in Panama. However, we know that this bird is found more often alone than in pairs and that it forages mostly at middle and lower tree levels. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species. Characteristics: This species has a total length of 18.4 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The bill is blackish and the iris is bluish-white. This bird has the crown, the nape and the moustachial stripe all bright red. Then, the sides of the head are dull olive. Otherwise, the plumage above is yellow-olive. The flight feathers have rufous and black bars. Then, the throat and the chest are olive green and in addition, the chest shows some beige spots. The lower underparts are beige yellow but with gray-olive stripes. The female looks similar but the crown and the moustachial stripe are dull olive.
