Habitat: This Woodpecker can be found in humid forests, second-growth woodland and forest borders. It is found only in the highlands. Distribution: This species has been reported from eastern Mexico to Venezuela and northwestern Argentina. Natural History Notes: The Smoky-brown Woodpecker is usually found alone or in pairs, foraging at middle and low tree levels. It will prefer to feed on smaller branches. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: This species has a total length of 16.5 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This small bird is characterized by a uniform smoky-brown plumage, that may show some tawny-olive tones. The part below is however a little grayer. The male shows a red crown that the female lacks; but the immature bird will show a red rearcrown.
