Habitat: This Quetzal species will favor forested habitats in the highlands of western Panama. Distribution: This species has been reported from southern Mexico to western Panama. Natural History Notes: The Resplendent Quetzal is considered to be one of the most beautiful birds in the world! This bird is a fruit-eater, but their also feed on insects and frogs. This bird has a wide variety of calls and the most characteristic is the loud "hwaao" or "huaco". Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Near Threatened (NT). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 35.6 cm and 38.1 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The male has a yellow pointed bill and a dark iris. This male looks beautiful with a mostly glittering golden-green plumage and a rounded and laterally flattened crest. We can also admire the wonderful train that consists of lenghtened feathers of the upper tail-coverts. Then, the breast and the belly are red and the tail is white from below. The female has a duller plumage with the upper tail-coverts that usually does not extend beyond the tip of the tail. The plumage above is green with the head darker green and the part below more brown-gray. The chest is metallic green and the belly is red. The tail is dark gray and the outer feathers have white stripes and are tipped white
