Habitat: The Common moorhen can be usually found in freshwater lakes, ponds and marshes. Distribution: This species has been reported in America, from extreme southern Canada to northern Chile and northern Argentina. Natural History Notes: This aquatic bird will be usually seen swimming and will rarely fly. It will eat aquatic plant materials and small aquatic organisms. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 13 inches and 14 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This interesting bird has a particular appearance because it looks like a duck when it swims but looks more like a chicken when it walks on land. The bill is heavy and red with a yellow tip. A part of the bill is masked by a prominand reddish frontal shield. The legs are green. Then, the plumage is mostly dark gray with a browner coloration on the back and the wings. We can also distinguish a white stripe on the sides of the body adn the flanks. The immature bird will be overall paler and will have a brown bill, not red.
