Habitat: You may find this species on the ground, near streams and sometimes based on low trees. They may also be found in foothills in the lowlands. Distribution: This species has been reported from southern Mexico to northern Bolivia and central Brazil. Natural History Notes: The diet of the Sunbitten mostly consists in small vertebrates and fishes. They build domed nests in trees, and lay two eggs with blotched markings. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: This species has a total length varying between 17 inches and 18 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has a long, straight bill that shows an upper mandible yellow with black dots, and a lower mandible orange. The legs are fairly short and colored orange. Compared to the long neck, the head looks fairly small. Also, this bird has an unmistakable long tail with the shape of a fan. Regarding the coloration pattern, this bird has a black head with a white line over th eye and another across the cheeks. The neck and the upperparts are pale chestnut with fine black stripes. Also, the wing-coverts have white spots. The long tail has a banding pattern of black and chestnut. The throat is white and most of the underparts are beige with fine black bands. The wings show bright rufous patches that can be easily seen while the bird is flying.
