Habitat: This Woodpecker species may be found in humid forests and forest borders in the lowlands. Distribution: This species has been reported from southereastern Mexico to Caribbean western Panama. This bird is only known from western Bocas del Toro. Natural History Notes: The Chestnut-colored Woodpecker is usually found alone or in pairs and prefers to forage at middle and high tree levels in the forest. Its call is distinctive and consists of a nasal "keeyark", followed by on to two notes like " kuh-kuh". Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species. Characteristics: This species has a total length of 22.8 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has a strong, pointed yellow bill with some blue color at the base, and a red iris. We can first distinguish the prominent long pointed crest and is chestnut colored with some orange tones, like the rest of the head. The body is alse barred with black on the above, except for the head and the wings, and black on the part below as well. The rump might be yellowish. The male has in addition a red moustachial tripe and a red area below the eye.
