Habitat: The scythebill bird is usually found moist lowland forests or tropical moist montane forests. Distribution: This species has been reported from Costa Rica to Peru and Guyana. Natural History Notes: Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: This species has a total length of 10 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird is characterized by its long (2.5 inches) and decurved brown bill. The plumage is black on the head and brow on the back and both body parts are stripped with beige. The throat is buff and the underparts are brown with beige stripes. Finally, the wings and the tail are rufous red.
