Habitat: This species can be found in freshwater swamps and tree-bordered marshes and long rivers. Distribution: This species has been reported from Florida and southern Mexico to Bolivia, northern Argentina, the Greater Antilles and Uruguay. Natural History Notes: The Limpkin is not often seen in Panama, or very locally, most probably due to a lack of suitable habitats. You may find them perched on low trees and calling fairly loud, with a pattern similar to this: carr-rr-rao, car-rr-rao. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 26 inches and 28 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has long legs, a long thin neck and a long bill that is slightly decurved and somehwat ibis-like appearance. The most common race found throughout Panama has a dark brown plumage with fine white stripes on the head and the neck. The birds of this species, found in Bocas del Toro, are from a different race (dolosus) and are similar but have larger white stripes and these stripes extend toward the wings and the body.
