Habitat: Dry deciduous forest to moist evergreen forest. Elevation from lowlands to about 500 m. Distribution: Rare throughout its range. East coast of Mexico through Caribbean side of Central America, to Amazon basin, Guianas, Brazil, Argentina, also Trinidad. Natural History Notes: Guild 7: Highly Cluttered Space/Gleaning Sanguivores (Kalko, et al.1996) Roosts in small colonies in caves and hollow trees. May share cave roosts with Desmodus rotundus and other bat species. Preys primarily on birds although may occasionally feed on wild or domestic mammals. Reproduction not well known; females are probably polyestric. Characteristics: Moderate size. Forearm 48-54 mm, Mb 32-40 gms. Dorsal pelage short, light brown to dark reddish brown, ventral pelage paler, tail membrane U-shaped, lightly haired. Calcar and tail absent. Thumbs elongated, only a single pad on underside. Edges of wings white. Prominent glands in mouth secrete a foul odor. Upper incisors curve inward.
