Bocas Species Database Habitat: This Parrotlet species is rare, but you may find it in canopy and very humid forest borders in foothills. Distribution: This species has been reported from Costa Rica and western Panama. Natural History Notes: The Red-fronted Parrotlet is not well known in Panama and might have been overlooked. You may have better chances to see it early in the morning, as it will forage in small groups in the lower canopy. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Vulnerable (VU). Characteristics: This species has a total length of 17.8 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has a short tail with a square shape. The plumage is mostly green, with a characteristic red forecrown, red lores, and a red stripe below the eye. The leading edge of the wing and the wing-coverts are also red. Then, the primaries and the outer secondaries are black. The tail is pale green with the tip black, and the under wing-coverts is yellow. The female looks similar, but has much less red on the wings. |
