Habitat: This hummingbird prefers humid forest, second-growth woodland and forest borders habitats. Distribution: Species reported from Western Mexico; Guatemala to western Venezuela and western Ecuador. Natural History Notes: Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species. Characteristics: The total length varies between sexes. The male has a total length of 10.16 cm; meanwhile the female is a little smaller with a total length of 8.89 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The black tail is fairly long (2.54 cm) and is straight, except for the tip that is a little decurved. The male is green above with violet patch on the back. There is also the presence of a prominent violet-blue crown on the top of the head. The throat and the chest are both brilliant green and contrast with the violet breast and belly. The tails is black and has a deep fork shape. The female is also green on the above and the crown is also present although it has a more bronze coloration. Its throat and chest are pale gray-brown and the belly and breast have a darker gray coloration. The tail is not forked and the outer feathers are tipped white.
