Habitat: This Tanager species can be found in lower growth of humid forests and forest borders in the lowlands. Distribution: This species has been reported from eastern Honduras to western Ecuador. Natural History Notes: The Tawny-crested Tanager is fairy active bird that will be found foraging at low and middle tree levels, moving rapidly from branches to branches. It is found usually in groups of 6 to 12 birds and are fairly noisy. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: This species has a total length of 5.5 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The male has the overall plumage black, but we can easily distinguish its orange-tawny crest on top of the head. The female looks different with an olive brown coloration above and a brown plumage below. The immature bird will look like the female but will sometime shows a tawny crown.
