Habitat: This Grebe species will favor shallow ponds and lakes with marshy borders, in the lowlands. Distribution: This species has been reported from southern Texas and Mexico to central Argentina and the West Indies. Natural History Notes: The Least Grebe is usually seen alone or in pairs, swimming in fresh water sources. Its feeds on aquatic invertebrates and fish, and catch them by diving underwater. Its call consists of a high nasal "yank". Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: This species has a total length of 23 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has a fine, pointed black bill and an iris orange. The top of the head and the throat are black and the sides of the head and the neck are dark gray. Otherwise, the plumage is brown gray above with a paler coloration on the part below. We can distinguish some white on the center of the belly and the breast. The chest is more cinnamon brown. There is also a white patch that can be observed while the bird is flying. During the nonbreeding season, the adult has a white throat.
