Habitat: This species can be found in savannas and dense grassy fields in the lowlands. Distribution: This species has been reported from southwestern Costa Rica to Bolivia and Amazonian Brazil. Natural History Notes: The Red-breasted Blackbird will usually be found in groups, foraging on insects and seeds such as rice. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 7 inches and 7.5 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). When the male shows its breeding plumage, it is easy to identify it, with the black plumage with the brilliant red throat and breast. From September to March, the male will show the nonbreeding plumage, in which the wing feathers edges are all brown and it will mask a part of the red coloration. The female have a black-brown plumage on the above with a beige superciliary and a beige stripe on top of the head. The plumage below is also beige with stripes of brown along the sides of the body. Finally, the breast shows some pink patches.
