Habitat: This seedeater bird is fairly common in open areas such as gardens, clearings and semiopen agricultural fields. In panama, this species is found only in the lowlands of western Panama. Distribution: This species has been reported from southern Texas and Mexico to western Panama. Natural History Notes: Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species. Characteristics: This species has a total length of 4.5 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The male has a plumage mostly black on the above, but we can see that the rump is white to beige. The wings are black but have two white wing-bars and also a white speculum. This bird is characterized by the white throat and the white plumage that extend as a collar shape around the neck, forming a partial collar. The underparts are white, with the exception of the black band on the breast. The female has a brown coloration above and the wings are dark gray instead of black, but also show the two white wing-bars. The part below is cinnamon red with a paler coloration on the belly.
