Habitat: This Woodpecker species will favor forests, forest borders and clearings with large trees, in the western highlands. Distribution: This species has been reported from North America to western Panama. Natural History Notes: The Hairy Woodpecker is usually found alone or in pairs and will forage at all tree heights. It will often drums on trees. It mainly eats insects, but also fruits, berries and nuts. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 17.8 cm and 19 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). It has a pointed blackish bill and a black iris. The plumage is mosltly black above with a brown stripe on the center of the back and a white line behind the eye and on the sides of the head. Then, the part below is grayish-brown. The male has a in addition a red nape patch. We can also distinguish a brown patch at the base of the bill.
